JOE’S BROTHER’S BOOK.
My brother Brendan has written a book to tie in with the 150th anniversary of Sheffield FC, the world’s oldest football club who formed in 1857. It was published in October by Sports Books. It’s a fascinating and irreverent look at how football evolved in Victorian times in England’s public schools and Sheffield’s factories. It’s a perfect Xmas present for that football loving relative (and indeed anyone interested in rugby, cricket and Aussie rules too). Every page packed with a potential quiz question. Some of it’s amazing. (Eg, the factory where our Dad worked (and me and Brendan too in summer holidays) had a team which reached the quarter finals of the FA Cup, going out to West Brom). You can get it from Amazon, The Book Depository.com, etc.
“From Sheffield With Love” by Brendan Murphy
Published by Sports Books paperback, RRP £8.99
There’s a Yorkshire Post feature/interview with Brendan here

GIG CRAPNESS
Something In The Water (me, Polly and Tom Alder’s other band) played a crap gig at The George Tavern this week. No soundcheck, soundman not there ‘till 9, one feeble monitor which we couldn’t hear the vocals in. So we couldn’t hear ourselves singing and apparently neither could anyone else. In hindsight we should’ve just walked off after the first song but we gamely struggled on with the engineer’s tweakings making no difference.
Then tonight I’ve cancelled my solo gig for Filthy Pedro’s night in Archway. I’ve got a sore throat. Which I’m trying to protect for recording vocals on Monday.

GIG AUSPICIOUSNESS
Still, the next Blang on Wednesday Dec 12th should be a cracker with Being 747 and their From Amoeba To Zebra show and the return of Ashley Reaks, the last time he played I laughed continuously for 30 minutes. See Blangsite

RECORDINGS
We’re still slowly recording a new LP on weekends/days off. I’m in on Monday to record vocals and hopefully my voice’ll be better.I’ve had a cold at some point at least during the recording of every single Buzfuz album to date. We’re still planning to release Popes Part 3 as a single and we’re talking to Sam Alder (Tom’s brother) about making a video for it. More news next year.
Keep well
Joe

Tuesday Oct 2nd OCTOBER NEWSROOM
Goodbye and thank you to Cormac O’Hara who has updated these pages since we started the Buzsite. He’s finally had enough and is a busy chicken so from now on the band are going to be updating the pages. Thanks for all your help Cormac.
‘What’s new?’ I fondly imagine thousands of you screaming. We’ve been in the studio. We’ve done 8 songs in 4 days at One Cat, home to our ex-cellist/bassist Jon. The music’s more or less done. I’ve got to go in and sing next, which I’m supposed to be starting on Saturday. Except I’ve caught a bloody cold so we’ll see. We’ll be recording more songs over the next few months. There should be a new LP next year and a single, probably ‘Here Come The Popes (Part 3)’. Maybe on purple papal vinyl…
Oh, and we’re playing at Blang next week which is going to be a great night. Subterraneans headline and there’s Kinkajou and Nadege, all great stuff.
Stay de-tuned
Joe

RATIONAL FOR THE HARDCORE
Buzfuz were mentioned passingly in last week’s TimeOut in a preview of the Homefires festival, debating the merits of its becoming less strictly "folk" based: "...this year's Homefires is a more musically varied affair than any of its predecessors [...]If for you this is like Dylan going electric (or Sergeant Buzfuz going rational, for the real hardcore), you should check out Sunday's Upset The Rhythm hop." No, us neither… but nice for the band to get a mention.

ANTIFOLK COMPILATION
There’ll be a Sergeant Buzfuz track on an upcoming antifolk compilation CD compiled by JJ Crash and released on the AFUK label. The Buzfuz track is ‘Too Stupid’ which is an out-take from the Fire Horse CD. More news soon, word is on a summer release.

The band wish him the best of luck for the future. Jon will probably continue to act as engineer/producer for Buzfuz recordings.

A double page feature on London antifolk in this week’s Timeout features an interview with Joe. He stressed in the interview that he doesn’t think of Buzfuz as antifolk, despite loving the scene and Blang being a major platform for AFUK acts. However, not for the first time, Buzfuz are presented as an antifolk band. “Everyone keeps calling us antifolk so maybe we are” said Joe today. “It’s not surprising, I put on loads of antifolk and I play at the antifolk festivals so I can’t complain. I said I don’t consider us antifolk but I suppose that doesn’t fit with the story.”
This month’s Blang night is tomorrow and features Shibuya Crossings, The Wave Pictures, Angel Racing Food, Matt Dolphin and William Nein, see Blang

Fri July 8th
We hope you and your loved ones are all okay after yesterday's events. We'll leave you with this message from Lach:

I am currently on a travel week in Estonia and woke up this morning to the horrendous news of the London bombing. On my
last music tour through the UK in May I stayed with friends and fans instead of hotels. It made the tour so much more immediate, fun and real. I was charmed to find such similarity in how most of the people I met lived, more specifically, the decor of their homes. They were filled with posters, books, CDs and magazines all reflective of the underground, boho, rock and roll life. And everyone in these rooms was kind, giving, poetic, searching and sincere. It's as if there is this global country called "Rocknrollia" or something with no borders and no government but an international populace of artists, outcasts, rebels, dreamers. And floating above it, like a polluted crust, is this mad world of politicians, fundamentalists, businessmen, liars and thieves who are violently screwing everything up. Well, they struck again today and they will strike again tomorrow but they will all ultimately lose out to the Jedi nature of the true Rockanrollians for nothing can withstand the beat, the rhythm and the melody of non-violent liberation. And I think you know what I mean . . .

Step lightly, Stay free

Love

Lach

Thurs Dec 23rd TOUR REPORT
Joe had a great time on his solo tour. His sisters came to the Sheffield Grapes. Joe, Chris T-T and Thomas Truax almost got arrested by the S. Yorks Police the next day after parking outside a bank which had had it’s ATM tampered with (Chris even had to show the DI the last 2 photos in his digital camera). The tour party stayed 2 days in Hull, Chris and Joe playing the Monday open mic at the Adelphi the night after their gig, with Bod from Fonda 500 taking Kate’s place to duet with Joe on Blanket TV. He also picked up a copy of "One Man And His Bog" the book commemorating 20 years of The Adelphi and it’s legendary proprietor Paul Jackson. The Leeds crowd were small but perfectly formed and Joe made arrangements with Russell from The Research for them to play at Blang in February. The Cumberland Arms in Newcastle was a great homely pub with an Irish session downstairs and the touring trio supporting a blistering and amusing set from Ballboy upstairs. They then drove through the wee small hours to Edinburgh to crash at the SL Records HQ, making use of Nick Ballboy’s room while he was touring. The Edinburgh show was in a disused Methodist chapel above the Forest Café and Joe enjoyed playing Here Come The Popes (Part 1) there (a new song cataloguing papal corruption up to the 10th century). Earlier in the day he played it at an in-store session at Avalanche Records. The final gig for Joe was at Dr Drake’s in Aberdeen, a venue now with a place in his heart next to the Hull Adelphi. In the early hours of the morning messrs Buzfuz and Truax could be seen doing the conga with the venue’s crowd and jiving to Benny Hill tunes. Joe wants to get the band at some of these venues next year. Watch this space!

Then everyone jammed for 45 mins with Johny Brown on decks adding ambient stuff and trombone. 21/7/03
Yesterday Joe journeyed up to the Truck Fest in Oxfordshire with antifolk inventor/singer Thomas Truax. Joe guested on analogue synthesiser in Thomas' set.

1/7/03
Much fun at Blang last night with Jeff Lewis joining Buzfuz at the end of their set to play SK1 piano on 2 Julian Cope songs, "Sleeping Gas" and "Sunspots". Then Joe, Kate, Paul The Girl and Grandmaster Gareth guested in Jeff's amazing set with at one point an improbable 7 musicians on the tiny stage. (Tiny: would comfortably fit inside the back of a football net).

18/5/2003: on Saturday may 17 Joe joined Jeffrey Lewis and his band onstage at The Spitz as an impromptu guest on psychedelicate existential dronerock ode "Springtime". Buzfuz played the band's SK-1 keyboard.

Buzfuz appeared live in session on Johny Brown's Resonance FM show "Mining For Gold" on May 2. Joe and Kate played "Ghost", new song "Pour It From The Kettle" and "Swim" and Kate read a Keats poem over some ambient glitches! The Rebel popped in to play "Death Is Just A Dream", Joe brought in some Nico and Johny saluted Joe's Sheffield roots by spinning Clock DVA's classic '4 Hours".

13/04/2003: BUZFUZ SESSION ON RESONANCE FM
Joe and Kate are playing a live radio session on Resonance FM on May 2. They'll be doing 2 songs on the Friday afternoon show hosted by Johny Brown from the magnificent Band Of Holy Joy. Johny's show airs from 1 'till 2 pm.  Joining them live on the show: The Rebel, who headlined last July's Blang! and who delights in picking the scabs off country music and feeding them up the ass of rock'n'roll. 104.4 FM.

PREVIOUS BUZFUZ NEWS:

---------------------

joe has finished recording 14 songs for the 2nd buzfuz album. 57 minutes of music. he's currently considering which songs to use. he'll probably drop 2 or 3 to make the cd shorter.

welcome to the sergeant buzfuz website. maybe you stumbled here websearching info on sergeants, majors, corporals etc. but you're probably here looking for info/stories/rumours/lies about sergeant buzfuz and his music or the monthly blang! nights he puts on at the 12 bar club.
keep checking back regularly and of course you can always click here to join our mailing list.

'blang! runs the 2nd monday of each month at the 12 bar club, denmark st, london. i put on acts from new york's incredible antifolk scene as well as people from over here with a similar lyrical or musical edge and non-corporate attitude. it tends to be acoustic based cos the 12 bar stage is q. tiny, but anything that fits physically and musically'.
